More than anything else, “But I’m a Cheerleader” is an incredible piece of satire. I love it because it has none of those things. More recent movies about gay conversion therapy, like “Boy Erased” and “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” might prime newcomers to “But I’m a Cheerleader” to expect a serious tone, intense religiosity as a central theme, a sort of beigey color palette and a bittersweet ending. The film has a somewhat bleak premise on paper - Megan (Natasha Lyonne, “Russian Doll”), the titular cheerleader, is placed in a gay conversion therapy camp called True Directions after a number of factors (including but not limited to her vegetarianism, Melissa Etheridge posters in her room and the fact that she doesn’t like to kiss her boyfriend) lead her parents to believe that she is a lesbian. It’s like it came out of the ether fully-formed, specifically to make me happy.
But im a cheerleader movie#
A movie that features RuPaul as a goateed “ex-gay” named Mike who introduces himself by saying, “I, myself, was once a gay,” in its first few minutes feels unreal. Sometimes I can’t believe that “But I’m a Cheerleader” exists. For Pride Month, Daily Arts wanted to cover this self-search and love through our favorite forms of art, with this experience revealing more to the reader and writer about how many ways there are to celebrate and reflect on queerness. Naturally, this translates into many different ways of approaching the LGBTQ+ experience. So it shows how versatile her acting skills are.The Arts world is one filled with self-expression and introspection, whether from artist or from audience member.

In this, however, she's very naive and very easily influenced by others. Natasha Lyonne is superb! In other roles, she's been very streetwise with an externally strong sense of self. The way that it's done also makes a fine job of showing that you can't "pray the gay away"'and that you can't change who you are- and that you bloody well shouldn't have to because there's nothing wrong with being gay or bi!

It instead legitimises the two main characters love for each other without any connotations of a straight mans fantasy, as well as the relationships between the other male and female characters. It's also a lovely romance film which is such a rare novelty in a world where any lesbian films are aimed primarily at the straight males voyeuristic gaze! This doesn't do that. The comedy works really well because you're laughing at how ludicrous the system is. A risky move for the film makers, but the way that it's done makes the comedy work really well. The over the top nature of it make it a very obvious parody of the "pray the gay away" gay conversion therapy culture.
